PEG-MGF (PEGylated Mechano Growth Factor)

PEG-MGF is a PEGylated (polyethylene glycol-modified) form of Mechano Growth Factor (MGF), a splice variant of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). MGF is naturally expressed in muscle tissue in response to mechanical stress or damage, where it plays a role in activating satellite cells and supporting tissue repair. PEGylation extends its half-life in circulation, making PEG-MGF more stable than unmodified MGF. It has been studied in research for muscle regeneration, recovery, and repair. PEG-MGF remains experimental and is not FDA-approved for therapeutic use.

How It Is Used in Research Settings

  • Investigated for muscle repair and regeneration after mechanical overload or injury.
  • Studied for stimulating satellite cell activation, supporting hypertrophy and recovery.
  • Explored in aging models to examine potential reversal of sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss).
  • Examined in tissue regeneration studies outside of muscle, including cardiovascular repair models.

Proposed Uses (Research Areas)

  • Muscle growth and hypertrophy research.
  • Recovery and regeneration after exercise or injury.
  • Aging and sarcopenia models.
  • Cardiac and tissue repair studies.

How It Is Dosed in Research Settings

  • Injectable (Subcutaneous or Intramuscular): Studied at 200–400 mcg per injection, 2–3 times per week in muscle regeneration models.
  • Targeted administration: Sometimes injected near the muscle being studied to examine localized effects.
  • Cycle length: Research protocols typically last 4–8 weeks depending on the recovery or hypertrophy endpoints.
  • Handling: Supplied as lyophilized powder; reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, stored refrigerated, and protected from light.

Important Considerations

  • Regulatory status: PEG-MGF is not FDA-approved; all applications remain experimental.
  • Evidence base: Most data is preclinical or from in vitro studies; human clinical research is extremely limited.
  • Safety: Long-term safety is unknown. Potential concerns include abnormal tissue growth or stimulation of undesired cell proliferation.
